Yahweh

“Well, the Israelites’ god didn’t punish them, let me tell you,” Sheshai said, now some venom entering his voice. “They call him Yahweh; he is a brutal and vindictive god. They say his exact words about Jericho were ‘Smite every living thing with the edge of the sword.’ Shit. He didn’t even let them keep what they looted from us—he took it for himself, so his priests could eat off plates of solid gold.”

Sheshai leaned forward, his eyes rolling suspiciously, and lowered his voice into a madman’s caricature of a conspiratorial whisper. “He makes war upon our gods. He wants to kill them all, because the Israelites fear him so much they’d rather worship anything but him. Everywhere they go, the Israelites keep trying to find other gods to worship; sometimes, when they can’t find any, they’ll just invent one of their own. HIs grip on these people is unbreakable—he kills his own people by the thousand if one of them so much as looks upon a foreign god.”
